Was Yettaw a Pawn of Burma’s Generals?

There is growing doubt among Burmese observers that the bizarre case of an American intruder who managed to enter the highly restricted property of democratic opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was the work of one misguided individual.

The incident involving John William Yettaw, an American national who allegedly wanted to interview Suu Kyi for a book he was writing, has resulted not only in his arrest, but also that of Suu Kyi herself, as well as her two live-in assistants and her doctor.

The arrests come less than two weeks before the democracy icon was due to be released after serving six under house arrest.

“We suspect that the military authorities turned a blind eye when the guy swam across Inya Lake,” said Ngwe Lin, the joint general-secretary of the exiled Democratic Party for a New Society. “I believe Burmese security authorities were definitely involved.”

Like Ngwe Lin, many Burmese are questioning the circumstances surrounding Suu Kyi’s latest brush with the ruling junta’s draconian laws. Many have expressed surprise at how easily Yettaw was able to enter her residential compound, which is one of the most tightly restricted properties in the country.

Aung Lin Htut, a former military intelligence officer and deputy ambassador to the US who is currently living in Washington, said that it was unlikely that Yettaw simply outwitted security personnel by swimming to Suu Kyi’s lakeside home.

“There’s always tight security around Inya Lake,” he said, pointing out that the area is also home to many other VIPs. “Without help from security personnel, there’s no way you could just swim across the lake.”

The strange case of the Inya Lake swimmer first attracted attention on May 7, when it was reported by The New Light of Myanmar. The state-run newspaper identified Yettaw as “John Willian [sic] Yeattaw,” and claimed that he had been arrested on the morning of May 5 as he was swimming away from Suu Kyi’s home.

Although the regime has made no official mention of the incident, the story was quickly picked up by junta-friendly blogs set up by the Ministry of Information, which claimed that Suu Kyi now faced up to five years imprisonment for violating the restriction order under which she was placed in detention.

Sure enough, on Thursday, Suu Kyi was officially charged under Section 22 of the State Protection Act, which says that “any person against whom action is taken, who opposes, resists, or disobeys any order passed under this Law, shall be liable to imprisonment for a period of from three years up to five years, or to a fine of up to 5,000 kyat, or both.”

Burmese opposition groups were quick to denounce this move to extend Suu Kyi’s incarceration.

“It is nothing more than a political ploy to hoodwink the international community so that they can keep Daw Aung San Suu Kyi under lock and key while the military maneuvers its way to election victory in 2010,” said Dr Sein Win, a cousin of Suu Kyi and the prime minister of the Washington-based National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, which describes itself as the country’s government-in-exile.

Another suspicious aspect of this whole episode is the fact that Suu Kyi’s doctor, Dr Tin Myo Win, was also taken into custody shortly after Yettaw’s arrest. As her personal physician, Tin Myo Win is one of the few people who have regular access to Suu Kyi.

According to opposition sources, Yettaw told them he had made an unsuccessful attempt to enter Suu Kyi’s compound during a trip to Rangoon that lasted from November 7 to December 3, 2008.

Sometime after that incident, Suu Kyi asked Tin Myo Win to inform the authorities about it on her behalf. The physician duly reported the attempted illegal entry to the Police Special Branch, but no action was taken.

“By arresting Tin Myo Win, the military authorities tried to stop him from spreading the information about Yettaw’s previous efforts to break in,” said a Rangoon-based observer.

Now everyone is trying to figure out who John William Yettaw, 53, of Falcon, Missouri, really is, and what motivated him to undertake a stunt that has attracted worldwide attention.

According to an Associated Press report, Betty Yettaw, his wife, said that he simply wanted to talk to Suu Kyi as part of his research on forgiveness and resilience.

Markus Demetrius,

I'd loathe commenting on the courage and religion of Americans, but their leaders/ruling elite's questionable motives and hypocrisy/double standards are common knowledge, especially in the Third World, except for those who merely scratch the surface and emulate the US for its success but are blind to its fatal flaws responsible for much of the world's woes today.

But the point is self-reliance. Burmese of all ethnicities together are perfectly capable of dealing with the military dictatorship provided they unite and stand up against the junta.

Evidently, we could use material help such as funds and arms from our friends, whom we shall forever be indebted to as our friends indeed. This is well within the capability of the international community if they really desire to help our nation.

That Yettaw was a pawn is obvious, and so far the facts point towards his being a willing pawn. My question is: Why is the USA so interested in invading a country like Iraq and using "giving democracy to the people" as an excuse when the people there don't even want democracy. The powers that be know full well that the Burmese people are practically begging for democracy...are dying for it, and that they actually would be welcomed with open arms by the country's civilian population, yet America does nothing! The Americans are cowards for their inaction towards the plight of the Burmese people, simply because it might anger China. Every time an American president talks of advancing freedom and democracy it's nothing but a ploy to fill the pockets of those who are willing to pay for the next election cycle. Just look at the religion of most Americans and you'll see where they get their hypocritical nature from.

Yettaw may not be a pawn of the generals but the generals are using Daw Suu as a pawn. They keep her in their bag, under house arrest, and they use her when they need her. In a very near future, before or after the election, they will use her to get the international backing on their elected government.

If Yettaw was too interested in DASSK, he must know, very soon she will be released and he can't wait a few days to interview her? How important is his book?

A Burmese saying goes: “It is as clear as an elephant walking across an empty paddy field.”

Yes. But one should not jump into conclusions fast. Keep your news and infos creditable. Just wait a few days for official news from US about Yettaw.

The junta are spineless men of poor character and quality because they use this weak excuse of Yettaw to continue to abuse "the Lady."

Before I left the country I used to visit the Lady's home where celebrations were held on Independence Day, Arzani Day and Thingyan festival. Even the NLD members are not easy to get inside her home, for outsiders who are not members of NLD have to give their identification at more than one place (check point).

When I was there I was aware that the lake behind the lady's home was frequently patrolled by a military motor boat. Some said there are also underwater mines laid down by the military intelligence service. In this connection, the one that intruded into the lady's house compound would not succeed without the assistance of intelligence men, I believe. After all, John was used by the regime and he should be verified whether he is a pro-regime man or not. Believe it or not, the regime (SPDC) has American connections and many Americans are in its pay role. They are mostly from the business circle. Beware of those dogs unleashed by the notorious and cunning military regime of Burma.

It is true that the American guy had fallen into the dog's tricks of the junta. How can he outsmart the watch dogs alert on 24 hrs? They will be very happy if a foreigner come and approach them to kill DASSK. The junta is very cunning, they don't care anything they will kill even in the open ground like the Depayin massacre.

plan B,

"4) Severe consequences should be spelled out and articulated clearly upfront or through behind channels (e.g., forming a resolution to fund the armed opposition directly if this incident is being used/abused by the SPDC."

Attaboy! You tell 'em! To fund the armed oppositon, eh? You seem to have undergone a Damascene conversion yourself. For real or just posturing?

Kachin Gyi,

"Burmese generals will never bring national reconciliation in ethnically diverse Burma ever. They are the ones who divide a genuine Union."

Couldn't agree more. Remember it's their raison d'etre and claim to legitimacy - 'holding the union together'. By holding a gun to all our collective head. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.

As for the legal implications in fighting the case, it's a question of whether we have a semblance of justice and the rule of law or another sham like most things presided over by our fine upstanding generals. It'll be interesting to see what the US does.

Daw Suu’s lawyer should charge those (SPDC) who guard her residence. They purposely allowed him to breach security, and put Daw Suu's life in danger. They did not carry out their duty efficiently. Trust me, Burmese generals will never bring national reconciliation in ethnically diverse Burma ever. They are the ones who divide a genuine Union. Manipulative, fascist and terrorist minded generals. Democracy supporters should take up arms and fight SPDC now under the Responsiblity to Protect (R2P) charter.

By all accounts, he is eccentric, but peace-loving, well-meaning, forgiving, mild-mannered. I am not surprised if a man with those characters could be easily transformed into a Manchurian Candidate.
The mystery deepens when he is charged with illegal entry into the country. How on earth did a white guy manage to cross the border, find his way to Yangon, and stay at a hotel without a valid visa? Why did they deport 2 US journalists prior to this plot with no apparent reason after getting approval from the authorities? And the location of his arrest was close to IBC, which is more than one mile away from his starting point, even though he had better choices. There are many more peculiar points not to mention how successfully he outwitted the security line to slip in and out of the her residence.
Surprises are echoing from every corner of the world including his wife: "He has asthma real bad, that's why I'm surprised he swam so good," she said.

Yettaw knew what he was doing, the interview with his ex-wife indicates the man was in a hurry to arrive in Burma, he could not even wait for the holidays to make the trip...

Hurry? Why? He was on a job.

Security was eased around Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's house few weeks ago, and how strange a man swims a long distance and is not detected by security. She is a prisoner after all (detention means the same).

Yettaw is an ex-soldier and all over the world the principle and rules are the same in respect to restricted areas. He knows very well the meaning of high security areas, he stepped into a forbidden area but he had to be guided.

His hurry to come and mess up everybody's lives was sponsored by the junta, there is no doubt about this. This man has been well prepared to do a job and he succeeded.

How were Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her assistants to deal with this man? Fragile women could not handle the hulk. For an asthmatic diabetic, he is pretty fit. Anybody gets well at the sight of $$$.

This might still turn out to be a win-win situation!

The SPDC has now shot themselves in the foot badly and unknowingly. The US should send a legal expert on international as well as Burmese law with the following strategy:

1) That the law imposed/violated by this idiot Yettaw is unlawful/unreasonable! Therefore make the offense a non-plus.
Any lawyer with half a brain representing Yettaw can easily make this case
2) Since he is a US citizen, Clinton should warn the SPDC in no uncertain terms that as a US citizen "due process" will be expected if he is to be used as an example for violating Burmese laws which are by any measure unreasonable.
3) Should warn the SPDC of severe consequences if Yettaw's idiocies are used against Aung San Suu Kyi since point 1 has made the offense non-plus.
4) Severe consequences should be spelled out and articulated clearly upfront or through behind channels (e.g., forming a resolution to fund the armed opposition directly if this incident is being used/abused by the SPDC.

It is nothing less than a set up. Given the circumstances and the information available thus far, the American was used by Than Shwe's thugs to meet their own ends - the continued detention of Daw Suu - and smear her reputation and standing at the same time.

I am really ashamed of myself as a man born in Burma when the likes of Than Shwe, also a man born in the same country, resorted to such lowdown acts - hitting below the belt - even on a helpless and innocent woman like Daw Suu.

This is not the way of gentlemen, much less soldiers, to act like this. Don't they know what "chivalry" means at least?

They never grow up! And they never will!

They should check Yettaw's bank statements when he returns to the US. If he has more money than before he went to Asia, that might have something to do with Suu Kyi's arrest.

Tom Tun Wrote:

The guy is extremely selfish and his ego is as big as the universe, or simply he is shaking hands with the devil and sides with the generals. Either way, he has caused too much trouble.

Another point of view is, everyone around the world can see Than Shwe's fear of Daw Suu ahead of his fake show so-called 2010 election. Than Shwe doesn't even know what justice or a just law is. The constitution he drafted has no intention of pulling the country toward the right direction, but is only designed to help the military hold the power eternally.

If this American has a deal with the generals, there is no strong proof. The only thing is all Burmese citizens should come together, stand together and fight for freedom.
