Workers in a clothing factory near Rangoon went on strike on Wednesday to support demands for more pay.

The 20 workers are employed by the “Super” factory in Shwe Pyi Thar Industrial Zone, north of Rangoon.

One source told The Irrawaddy the workers were demanding an increase in their salaries, which currently average 30,000 kyat ((US $30.30) per month. Some were on a daily rate of 1,050 kyat ($1.1) for a shift that ended at 8 p.m., the source said.

Security around the factory was increased while workers and management negotiated, one resident said.

Thousands of workers in another Rangoon area, the Hlaing Tharyar Industrial Zone, and at the “Sky” clothing factory in the western part of Rangoon's Insein Township, went on strike last month in support of their demands for better pay and working conditions.

"garment factory workers in Burma? I thought all workers have been forced into prostitution following the US sanctions."
Sensitivity training and fact checking are warranted here.
There are factories owned jointly, products range from contact lens and garments to others from resources rich in Myanmar.
The exported products somehow get labeled "Made in China," mostly with Vietnam, Korea etc due to the sanctions.
The price of the products are all vastly below the fair market value due to you know who's mentioned by Salai Lian.
SO the workers get paid much below "sweat shop" wages.
Prostitution is their last desperate attempt to survive.
So please do not belittle or take the whole process lightly with your "thought." Finding out the tragic truth concerning ordinary citizenry's plight is a must and do not take this issue lightly.

I thought all workers have been forced into prostitution following the US sanctions.

In an under-developed country such as Burma with no recognised trades unions, it's hard to see the proletariat undermining the system. However, others can learn from the way these garment workers are organising and, essentiallly, struggling for their rights.

It is good to see Burmese workers standing up for their rights. It also seems to indicate how desperate the situation has become for them.
