Junta Snr-Gen Than Shwe toured Bogalay and Pyapon townships on Monday, areas in the Irrawaddy delta that were devastated by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008.

Burma’s state-run media reported on Tuesday that Than Shwe and his delegation toured medical clinics, schools and government departments in Bogalay Township.

It was his second trip following the cyclone that devastated the Irrawaddy delta, killing almost 140,000 people and affecting more than 2 million, in one of the worst humanitarian disasters in Burma’s history.

Than Shwe told government authorities to implement construction projects on roads, bridges and buildings, according to state-run media which ran front-page stories on Tuesday, saying the delta has almost fully recovered from the cyclone’s devastation.

Than Shwe was widely criticized in the cyclone’s wake for waiting two weeks to visit the delta and for refusing to allow foreign humanitarian aid to enter the country, seriously delaying the rescue effort. Authorities refused to let ships carrying relief supplies from the US, France and Britain to enter its territorial waters, reportedly in fear of an invasion.

NGOs in the delta say that many people still need aid and lack shelter and adequate food. A Rangoon based NGO, which provides shelters and clean water in Laputta, told The Irrawaddy on Tuesday that it has cut its services in half because of a lack of funds.

“There are many things to be done, but we can’t do it as we don’t have enough money. For people who don’t get shelters, they have to wait,” he said.

Cyclone Nargis devastated agriculture and fisheries, the two major industries in the storm-affected area, and they have yet to recover fully.

According to a Rapid Food Security Assessment released in March by the United Nations’ World Food Programme, 83 percent of sampled households reported being in debt because they had to borrow money to buy food.

Despite the preponderance of objective articles even in The Irrawaddy, on SPDC reasons for building Naypyidaw and Nargis, you chose the worst and least irrelevant one, propagated by Turnell.
As for veiled biblical example of Solomom don't you think you are raising the bar too high after making the SPDC a fool with your obvious no better than a brutal, lying, knifing entity?
If you wish for a "Solomon of a government," you should quote Dharmmapada:

SPDC does not do Bible. Remember Xenophobia?

When King Solomon advised to cut the baby in half and give a half each to two women who claimed to be the real mother, the real mom was afraid her son would be killed, so she agreed to give her son to the other woman.

When Nargis hit Burma, the fake mom (dictator) refused some of the foreign countries' aid (which the victims really needed) because it was afraid to lose power.

But someone said he didn't like the dictator but the dictator and his team have done great deal of work. What kind of work? Making the celebration at new capital (according to fortuneteller's prediction to move capital is right)? Who blocked & robbed the Burmese public donations (forget about the foreign aid). About 140,000 people dead. India & Thai warned earlier. Fake mom did any evacuation for that? Who made this news low profile & emphasized for new referendum? Why? Real mom afraid to her son will be killed but fake mom is OK. Do you know what I mean?

Tide,

That is not mentioning the projects that will house the future villages with the latest in greed technology.

Dictator or not, SPDC has benefited the citizenry. That is and will never be mentioned due to people like Turnell who regard this present absolutely needed foray as US "sussing out". What an insult! Talk about absolute disregard for the benefit of the people.

The language does determine that man.

Nothing but a photo opp by Burma's king of propaganda!

Meanwhile 50 journalists and activists were arrested so there will be no one to talk to the US delegation, and one famous personality from the Cyclone Nargis relief effort, actor Kyaw Thu, is to be put on trial.

All he did was help bury the cyclone dead.

Help us bury that junta!

Compared to the 2005-Katrina storm in the US, to the 2004 boxing day Tsunami, Than Shwe and his team have done a great deal of work.

Even though US$11 billion dollars was pledged to Indonesiam after the Tsunami, people are still living without shelters and food in Benda Ache.

As of Nov. 3, 2009, Myanmar has only received US$ 68,298,127, and the list is compiled by OCHA based on information provided by donors and appeal organizations.

More than 100,000 people died in Nargis , which is one third of the deaths from the Tsunami.

Myanmar has built a number cyclone shelters for disaster prevention purposes. Paddy fields are reviving. Shelters are being built. Schools are open.

The so-called demo groups are throwing sand in the works as they are not getting a share.

I don't like dictators, but there has been worse. People, who did not want the military but now encourage the military to become more effective and responsive are growing oversea and particularly inside the country. Shame on you demos or demons!
